Music of Ulysses S. Grant’s Era: 8th GM Regiment Band

Six college-age men in bright green uniforms of antebellum American style are playing

When you’re the 8th Green Machine (GM) Regiment Band that performs 19th-century brass ensemble music but it’s the pandemic fall of 2020, what do you do?

Why, you record a video at Manassas National Battlefield Park while playing over-the-shoulder brass instruments using 19th-century mouthpieces and also staying socially distanced!

Enjoy the tune “Reel—Boston Turns” from these George Mason University boys.

(Yes, this one gets filed under “Grant’s times”. No direct Ulysses S. Grant connection here, but “Ulyss” certainly heard brass music of this style. Whether or not he enjoyed it is a different matter.)
